I would like to start by saying what a well-organised event this was. It really was a credit to the event organiser, Trevor Norley, and to the whole MOTM Committee. With members joining the weekend from various directions, we all met up at Ingle Farm Shopping Centre where 10 Mustangs and 3 ‘daily drives’ greeted each other (and decided if they could hold off for coffee a little longer).
Trevor’s earlier assurance that the weather would be fine and sunny came true which was the end of his demonstrated skills, at least at the start of the Run. When it was time to leave the shopping centre Trevor took the lead and… you guessed it, he couldn’t find his way out of the car park. Eventually we escaped the car park and followed a black Mustang all the way along Main North Road to Gawler, via the Gawler Bypass, arriving (unless you were following Trevor who overshot the turn) at the Old Railway Station at Auburn where we re-grouped, wandered the grounds and enjoyed a delightful Morning Tea.
The weather was fabulous – sunshine has a way of putting everyone in a good mood, as evidenced by the conversations that got increasingly louder, but all in good fun. Saddle up, Boys (and Girls) – move’ em out was the call from the Trail Boss (Trevor) and we headed off towards Mintaro for lunch and a discovery tour of all things historic. After a leisurely break for lunch at various eateries we were ready for our next tour of the Clare Valley with all its wineries and historic homes etc.
Then it was on to check-in at the Clare Valley Motel. This was a surprise for some who hadn’t stayed there before. It is a beautiful, picturesque spot on a hillside and the facilities are excellent. If you want a nice place to stay for a great weekend, I’m happy to recommend a stay there.
Saturday evening was spent in the comfortable and congenial (private) upstairs Bar/Lounge and Dining area. We enjoyed socialising over pre-dinner drinks and it was great to have a chance to chat to everyone before sitting down to dinner. Dinner was served at 7pm and everyone had more than adequate serves of their choice. Then we all went back to the lounge for more chit chat – it amazes me that we never run out of things to talk about.
Sunday was a worry for some as the clouds gathered and threatened to drown us all, though the skies didn’t open until late in the afternoon. Those who headed for home before lunch ran into what was an impressive dust storm and sent text messages (not while driving, of course) to prove there really was a storm brewing.
The majority of the group left the Motel and went on to Auburn for lunch at the RISING SUN Hotel. The meals there were awesome and the service was exceptional. The weather being what it was, we all left with a full tank and headed home, arriving safely but no doubt a bit wet and, for some, also a bit muddy. That said, it really was a fabulous weekend all round. After all, cars can always be cleaned on our days off.
