This year has delivered some ‘very poor’ cruising weather (mindful that this is a family publication) and so it was great to hear the Weather Bureau had forecast a comfortable 30C for Sunday 20th November, the day of Shannon’s popular Yankalilla Cruise.
Based on our past attendances and on the excellent relationship we enjoy with the cruise organisers, Wayne and the Club had liaised with organisers to increase our allocated parking space from 15 cars to 30 cars, expecting this would also leave ample room for the club gazebos.
Departing from Marion Hotel it was a great group, with another 6 cars joining us at Sellicks and the ‘Hills’ adding on as we passed through Myponga. Sure enough, 30 cars was the magic number and the parade of MOTM Mustangs looked fantastic snaking down the hill and into Yankalilla.
Having checked with organisers that ‘new Mustangs’ would be welcome it was great to have four of the new models present, along with our 2008 Shelby and 2002 GT. There were cars covering almost everything from the 1964’s to the 2017’s.
David organised our space and has supported MOTM’s attendance since we announced the Club would return. Gazebos went up and a light breeze provided a great day. The temperature did climb and so our gazebos were right up there as some of the most popular places to be!
With close to 600 cars, there were so many fantastic sights – from early Australian survivors, hot rods and great American cars (naturally), through to Australian and British classics. Yankalilla really embodies the old saying “there’s something for everyone” and we are always surprised to find cars we don’t see anywhere else. The Lincolns provided high energy Rock ‘n Roll and the DJ played music from the era. The dance floor was busy, with Ron and Miriam holding up the MOTM ‘end’ there.
Organisers have since sent us a message thanking MOTM for its attendance and for its “impressive display”. It has certainly become a ‘mutual admiration society’ and our thanks go to Wayne for organising our space, given we are one of only a few clubs with a designated area. I know we’ll be back next year and will be made to feel very welcome.
If you’ve never been, think about coming along in 2017. It really is a fantastic day out!
